Gophers buzzing over Max Brosmer’s first NFL start
1+ hour, 18+ min ago (501+ words) Gophers coach P.J. Fleck had one final comment at the end of an 18-minute news conference on Saturday. "Congratulations to Max Brosmer, getting his first start, pretty awesome feat for Minnesota Golden Gophers," Fleck said after a 17-7 win over Wisconsin at Huntington Bank Stadium. Brosmer's first NFL start for the Vikings in Seattle on Sunday has had the Gophers buzzing inside the Larson Football Performance Center all week. For the U program, Brosmer is about as rare as a four-leaf clover. Brosmer's rise from five years at FCS-level New Hampshire to above-average Big Ten signal caller in 2024, then un-drafted in the NFL last April to now starting as a rookie in Week 13. Gophers offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh said if Brosmer heard about that story arc two years ago, "He would have looked at you like you were crazy." Fleck said messaged…...

4+ hour, 57+ min ago (126+ words) Pioneer Press staffers who cover the Vikings take a stab at predicting the outcome of Sunday afternoon's game against the Seahawks in Seattle: Seahawks 31, Vikings 20: Yes, the potential of Max Brosmer starting makes this game more interesting. No, it will not change the outcome against Sam Darnold, who has established himself among the NFL's best quarterbacks. Vikings 24, Seahawks 23: Brosmer goes 19 for 26 for 235 yards and 2 touchdowns. Seahawks 32, Vikings 18: This one will be particularly difficult for Vikings fans, the manifestation of every bad offseason decision their team made last spring. Seahawks 38, Vikings 13: You thought last week's loss to the Packers was awful, just wait until you see this one. Time to start over....
Gophers add quarterback and athlete to 2026 class after Axe win
11+ hour, 4+ min ago (171+ words) The Gophers football program picked up two commitments after winning Paul Bunyan's Axe on Saturday night. San Diego, Calif., quarterback Brady Palmer and Waukee, Iowa, athlete Tavian White pledged to the U class for 2026. Both players were on campus for Minnesota's 17-7 win over Wisconsin on Saturday. Palmer, a 6-foot-2, three-star recruit, de-committed from California after the Golden Bears fired Justin Wilcox earlier this month. He had other offers from Auburn, Arizona, Ohio State, Michigan State, Utah, Washington and others, per 247Sports. The Gophers have sought a second quarterback in the class this fall; Downers Grove, Ill., QB Owen Lansu has been committed since July 2024. White, a 6-foot, 175-pound prospect without a star rating, flipped his commitment from North Dakota this weekend. The high school defensive back had other offers from Northern Iowa, Lindenwood and Western Illinois. Palmer and White is the 30th and…...

Gophers tighten grip on Paul Bunyan’s Axe with 17-7 win over Wisconsin
18+ hour, 15+ min ago (584+ words) The Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe between the Gophers and Badgers was swayed by a former Hawkeye. Cornerback John Nestor, who transferred from Iowa to Minnesota this year, had two interceptions and a fumble recovery to help the U win the rivalry game, 17-7, on a snowy and cold Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium. The Gophers (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten) have won four of five Axe games against Wisconsin for the first time since a strong stretch across 1984-90. The Badgers (4-8, 2-7) endured their second straight losing season in two decades. Gophers players raced to the Axe in the north end zone as fans threw handfuls of snow in the air in triumph. Some fans stormed the field. While Nestor led a stingy defense, running back Darius Taylor scored on a 49-yard touchdown run in the first half and quarterback Drake Lindsey and tight end…...

21+ hour, 58+ min ago (173+ words) The Gophers will have 26 players participate in Senior Day festivities for the regular season finale against Wisconsin on Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium. One key player, star defensive end Anthony Smith will walk pregame, but the redshirt senior has not yet made a decision on if he will come back to Minnesota for the 2026 season. Here are the players participating in Senior Day: Receivers: Le'Meke Brockington, Logan Loya, Quentin Redding; tight ends: Jameson Geers, Drew Biber, Frank Bierman, Jack DiSano; offensive line: Marcellus Marshall, Dylan Ray, Aluma Nkele, Spencer Alvarez; and quarterback Emmett Morehead. Two defensive starters to return to Gophers versus Badgers
23+ hour, 32+ min ago (161+ words) The Gophers are expected to get two key defensive players back against Wisconsin at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Linebacker Devon Williams and cornerback John Nestor were not listed on the U's unavailability report, setting up their return for the Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe. Both will be welcomed back against the rival Badgers' strong running game, especially Williams, the U's leading tackler with 73 through 10 games. Williams and Nestor were sidelined for the 38-35 loss to Northwestern at Wrigley Field last week and were badly missed as Minnesota gave up 525 total yards to the Wildcats. Matt Kingsbury, who filled in for Williams last week, is listed as out, per the U, along with offensive lineman Kahlee Tafai and defensive lineman Sam Macy. Minnesota will still be without backup safety Garrison Monroe, receiver Cristian Driver, defensive lineman Theo Randle, cornerback Simon…...
Frederick: History suggests Max Brosmer’s first NFL start won’t go well. Our eyes say otherwise
1+ day, 1+ hour ago (698+ words) Seattle sports the NFL's fifth-best defense this season by yardage allowed (301 per game) and seventh by points (19.7). Minnesota is set to roll into Seattle with a struggling offense that has eclipsed the 20-point plateau and thrown for north of 150 yards one time in its last five games. Now the Vikings are forced to hand the keys over to an undrafted rookie quarterback for his first career start. All signs point to disaster. So why does it feel like this may just work? Perhaps it's the Vikings' recent history of offensive success. Wins haven't always followed, but this passing game has delivered high volumes of production largely regardless of who's been under center up until this season. The combination of Kevin O'Connell, Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson is a lethal one. Or maybe this is about Max Brosmer. An undrafted quarterback…...
