CFP, ESPN give power conferences 8 more weeks to come up with new format; deadline now Jan. 23
7+ hour, 16+ min ago (390+ words) November 24, 2025, 6:09 PM The College Football Playoff and ESPN are giving conferences nearly eight more weeks to figure out what the next version of the postseason tournament will look like. The CFP on Monday announced the extension of the deadline from Dec. 1 to Jan. 23 with the clear hope that the Southeastern and Big Ten Conferences can come to some sort of agreement on their vastly differing proposals. Next season marks the beginning of a six-year, $7.8 billion deal that ESPN made to televise the CFP games. The deal brings with it an opportunity to expand the postseason from the current 12-team format. Under provisions that established the playoff, the SEC and Big Ten will decide on its next iteration, but they are far apart. The SEC has been pushing for a bracket heavy with at-large berths chosen by a selection committee. Over…...
CFP, ESPN extend deadline for format changes
10+ hour, 22+ min ago (398+ words) The College Football Playoff and ESPN on Monday agreed to extend the deadline to determine if there will be any changes made to the playoff format for 2026 and beyond. The new deadline for completing the format and related structural decisions will move from Dec. 1 to Jan. 23, 2026. If not -- and they have been at a stalemate for months -- they have both said publicly the current 12-team format can remain in place for another season. One possible model that has been considered is four guaranteed spots for each of the Power 4 conferences, two for what will become the Group of 6 when the…...
