Location not found, or the wrong place

Places are found by name, by ZIP code or by your browser's location. Each way has its own message when it fails. Find yours below.

#A search finds no place

In Weather, a search that matches nothing shows No place by that name. and suggests what to try: a ZIP code, a city with its state or country, such as Springfield, IL or Paris, France, or coordinates.

Try, in this order:

  1. Check the spelling.
  2. Add the state or country. Many places share a name.
  3. Use a ZIP code if the place is in the United States.
  4. Try the nearest larger town.

In Maps, the message reads We could not find followed by your search. It suggests checking the spelling, adding a city or country, for example Main Street, Springfield, IL, or moving the map and searching again.

#"Use my location" does not work

Use my location asks your browser for your position, and the browser asks your permission first. These are the messages:

The message says What it means and what to do
Location access was not allowed. Search for your ZIP code or city instead. You, or your browser's settings, denied the permission. Allow location for this site in your browser, or search by ZIP code or city.
Your browser could not find your location. The browser could not work out where you are. Try again, or search by name.
No place found near you. Your position did not match a place 4Search knows. Search by name.
Your location could not be looked up just now. A temporary problem. Try again in a minute.

In Maps, similar messages say Your location is not available. Check your browser's location permission. or Your browser does not share its location. The position is used for the request you made. According to the Privacy Policy, it is not kept.

#The wrong place opens

The Weather overview opens on your home place when you have one. If it shows the wrong city, go to the right place's page and select Set as home. To clear it, select Your home on that place's page. See Set a home place and choose your units.

If the overview does not open on your home place at all, the cookie may have been cleared or Saved preferences turned off. See My choices, followed items or settings are not remembered.

#A page says it is being set up

That is a different case, and it clears by itself. See A service says it is being set up.

#Common questions

Why does the weather show a place I am not in?

The overview shows your home place, or, without one, may show the weather near the approximate location your network connection suggests. Search for your own place and select Set as home.

Does 4Search keep my location?

According to the Privacy Policy, the position you share is used for the lookup and is not kept.

My ZIP code is not found.

Check the digits. For a place outside the United States, search by city and country instead.
